The Young Jazz Society presents "Fractal", a collaboration with Syrian singer and oud player Nawras Altaky, which aims to bridge the gap between big band jazz and Arabic harmony. Nawras is a rising star in the Dutch music scene. The Young Jazz Society is led by conductor Tyn Wijbenga. Nawras Altaky - Manifesto “Labels Aren't Our Names” Grachten Festival composition assignment 2021 Premiered on the 15th of Aug 2021 in Paradiso Amsterdam. Under the theme “Listen! Music as a protest” Nawras wrote a composition titled “Labels Are Not Our Names”. The composition was meant to spread awareness and protest against thinking within boxes and boundaries. Basically to manifest that our social or political status, gender or health conditions , religion, colour or race are not our names! The composition was written in four main parts of 35min duration. The eclectic ensemble consisted of a wonderful diverse group of young artists gathered specially for this event.
